Eukanuba Dog Food Review

Eukanuba Dog Food was developed on the concept that dogs evolved from carnivores, so their diet should match a carnivorous diet as much as possible. The primary source of protein in Eukanuba Dog Food is animal protein. Eukanuba also caters to special dietary needs and food sensitivities of dogs.

Eukanuba Dog Food partners with a number of trusted dog organizations and breeders. With their mission to feed dogs the way nature intended, they have created their dog food formulas. The emphasis is on the meat and the rest supports the health and wellbeing of the dog.

Eukanuba Company Overview

Eukanuba was founded by Paul Iams in 1969. The brand focuses on premium nutrition for dogs and received its name from the jazz word Eukanuba which meant at the top or supreme. The brand makes food for dogs of every age, size and breed. The parent company The Iams Company was formally in charge of production but thirty years after inception, Eukanuba was acquired by Procter and Gamble.

Eukanuba Dog Food changed hands once again and is now manufactured by Menu Foods, a part of Simmons Pet Food Inc. All these changes in ownership of the brand could have possibly resulted in its quality and subsequently in its popularity dropping. The brand gets a 3-star rating from customers and has been the subject of several recalls.

In March 2007 Eukanuba Dog Food was part of the Melamine recall. A few years later in 2010, the FDA issued a report stating potential contamination by salmonella in Eukanuba products forcing a recall. Again, in August 2013 a number of Eukanuba dry dog food products has to be recalled due to potential salmonella contamination.

Many customers exercise caution when buying Eukanuba Dog Food because of its bad track record when it comes to salmonella contamination and safety. The presence of ingredients like corn, wheat gluten, beef by-product and so on in the dog food is also a cause of concern for many.
